For sale is a Northwest Coast Octopus dance mask. This very well made mask is carved by Gitksan artist Ron Sebastian (1945 – ).
In Northwest Coast art the octopus is common in shamanic art, due to its amazing transformational abilities. Octopus is a powerful potential sea spirit helper, often shown in complex compositions involving other creatures. Octopus is also a servant of the chief of the undersea world, and a symbol of great wealth. Octopus masks are rare.
This mask has the fasteners at the back of the mask for it to be worn or danced in ceremonial gatherings.
This mask has a certificate from the `KSAN Indian Craft Village’ which indicates it was made by an artist of Canadian Indian heritage.
The mask is 11 X 7 inches and in very good condition. It is made from birch and has opening for the eyes and nose.
