Description
For sale is a Northwest Coast cedar mask with a Ghost image.
This exquisitely carved mask has pierced eyes, nose, and mouth and is adorned with a full head of thick horse hair.
In NWC mythology, ghosts are the souls of the dead and they have their own villages. Shamans undertake dangerous voyages to ghost towns in the spirit world to gather knowledge and to retrieve lost souls.
The inscription on the reverse is faded but I could read Bella Bella `89 ghost mask.
Measurements are 10″ L X 8″ W X 6″ D and in very good condition.
The quality of the painting, carving, the thick full hair make for a very striking well done mask.
