For sale is an authentic African Gabon Fang forty three inch long mask.
This is one of the most dramatic and striking mask I have ever seen partly because of the size and color.
One can see how this mask inspired European cubism artists.
Masks like this were worn by the Ngil Society which was comprised of men.
This mask has the signature white face, whitened by kaolin, heart shape mid face marked out in black mineral pigment, & the long fine nose which are prominent features in Fang masks.
These masks are very difficult to carve. The size is 43 X 12 inches & 8″ deep.
There is some minor scuff marks; some chips along the side and back of head, and a minor touch up at the side which would be expected otherwise, it is in quite good condition for its age & size. The issues do not take away from the ‘look’ whatsoever.
This fabulous mask is one of a kind and would be a great addition to any mask collection and an outstanding decorative piece.
