Description

For sale is a Northwest Coast cedar bowl in a very rare Salmon motif.
This fabulous salmon bowl was created and signed by Master Kwakuitl Carver Doug Harper from Alert Bay, Vancouver Island, B.C.
In NWC culture, bowls were used in potlatch feasts where lavish dishes were used.  Many bowls were visual expressions of wealth and abundance.
Salmon  are celebrated by all NWC First Nations on the West Coast.  They are powerful symbols of regeneration, self-sacrifice and perseverance.
This piece has exquisite deep carving and an attention to detail on a beautiful piece of cedar.
The provenance on the base reads “presented to John Fraser Min of Fisheries & Oceans from Fisheries Assoc. of B.C. Provincial Meeting 1985 by Doug Harper Salmon”.
The artist, Master Carver Doug Harper etched his name below.
I believe this bowl was commissioned for this purpose as I have never seen another salmon bowl.
The quality and history of this salmon bowl would make it a great addition to any native art collection.
The measurements are 44″ L X 10 1/2″ W X  1 1/2″ H.
I have been selling authentic Northwest Coast Art on ebay since 1999 so buy with confidence.
