Description

For sale is a vintage Northwest Coast quality Kwakiutl rattle with a metal stand and a certificate of authenticity.

This Yadan or large round carved rattle is made in the traditional Kwakiutl method of cutting a block of wood to size, shaping it into the refined finish model, splitting it down the sides, then hollowing out the wood. Then stones or pellets are used for the sound and the two sides fastened together. The exterior wood is exquisitely incised with lines that result in a skilled carving.  This rattle is carved with the traditional Kwakiutl face and adorned with black and red paint.  The handle is bound with leather.

Rattles are used for ceremonies and theatrical dances and this rattle has a wonderful percussive sound.

This piece is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity by the Canadian government stating that is hand made by a Canadian Indian which was typical for the time period.

The measurements are 12 inches long X 5 inches wide and 3 1/2 deep and in excellent condition.

The certificate reads the artist is Victor Newman from the Kwakiutl tribe and that it is a rattle made from yellow cedar and dated 1978.

This rattle is a quality piece with a sturdy stand so it presents beautifully and would be a worthy addition to any native art collection.

I have been selling native art on line since 1999 so buy with confidence.
