Description

For sale is a human feast bowl by Canadian native artist Gene Brabant (1946- ).

This is a very rare piece as Gene usually carves masks and this is the only bowl I have ever seen of his. Bowls are generally made for Potlatch and this one is a feast bowl although it is impossible to know if this was used.

The inscription on the base reads “Quaq-uilth Human feast bowl Gene Brabant 11/78”.

The measurements of this exquisitely carved bowl are 15” L X 8” X 7”.

The bowl is in very good condition and has the patina of an older piece.

Gene Brabant is an established carver who is known for his vibrantly painted and expressively carved masks. Brabant was raised and trained with the prominent Hunt family. He has also apprenticed and worked with John Hunt and John Livingston and while he is trained in the Kwakwaka’wakw tradition he also works in the Nuxalk or Bella Bella style. Brabant’s carving and painting work is in private collections around the world, as well as in the permanent collections of several museums including the Royal Museum of British Columbia, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Man in Ottawa.

I have been selling native art on line since 1999 so buy with confidence.
