For sale is a Northwest Coast Mask by master carver Jay Brabant (1970-)
This mask is a study of an old Willie Seaweed mask, king of the sea.
This red cedar mask is adorned with acrylic paint, abalone shell, and horse hair.
Measurements: 16″H X 17″ W X 7″ D and in excellent condition.
It is signed by the artist and dated 2003.
About the artist: Born in Victoria in 1970, Jay is an accomplished carver whose work can be found in private collections around the world. As a child, Jay and his father Gene Brabant (also a master carver) would travel across North America to study the cravings of Indigenous people. Trained in several Northwest Coast styles, Jay now lives in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Jay continues to produce a variety of Totem Poles, Masks, Rattles, Bentwood Boxes etc. and his works are featured in fine galleries as well as the following books Northwest Coast Carving Traditions by Karen and Ralph Norris, and many editions of the North American Indian Art Magazine.
