Description

An Excellent Example of Authentic Quality Canadian First Nations Indigenous Art.

For sale is a Northwest Coast native carved and painted potlatch ceremonial portrait mask.

The Potlatch is a winter ceremonial feast that takes months to prepare for by hunting, gathering and preserving food.  It is combined with singing, dancing and theatrical entertainment.  The objective of the giver (chief) of the Potlatch was to give away as much property as possible to all who attended to witness the event.  It is considered honorable to amass a fortune to give away at a great potlatch.  Presently, the ceremony is a bridge between the contemporary world and the traditional cultures.

This mask is beautifully carved with fine detailed cuts and fluid lines & painted in the traditional colors of red & black.  The surface is nicely done with pierced (open) eyes, nose, and mouth.

The back has the following inscription “Greg Joseph Squamish BC Canada – Potlatch Ceremonial Mask of the Coast Salish, Squamish Nation `96.”

  It measures 11 1/2″ L X 7″ W X 4″ D.
