Description

For sale is a silkscreen “Haida Grizzly Bear” by Haida artist Bill Reid (1920-1998), perhaps the best known Canadian Northwest Coast native artist of the 20th century. A few of his many pivotal contributions was his role in reviving native art through his studying of historical techniques of native design, his carving abilities first in  precious metals in jewelry and later in wood and other mediums, and most importantly, his ability to communicate to a much wider audience. Between 1972 and 1981 Reid produced ten prints, all of which read as single-creature images centered on the paper – one of them being the Haida Grizzly Bear.

This limited edition print is #188/600 and it is signed and dated `73.  These prints are distinguished by the precision, elegance and refinement of form that characterize all he does.  In particular, Haida art is known for its bold, uncluttered look, the purity of its forms and the refined sense of balance that governs their use.  In addition, the colors black and red are adhered to by the Haida print makers. Haida Grizzly Bear – Hoiji – is one of the most prevalent figures in crest and shamanic art, as well as myths.  It is considered to be a close relation of human kind, therefore, it is a link between the human and non-human animal realms.  Due to their strength& fierceness, bears are frequently the guardians, protectors and spirits of warriors.

The dimensions are  24 ¾ X 19 inches. This unframed silkscreen print is in very good condition.
